Makar Sankranti also known as Makara Sankranti is celebrated in various parts of the Indian subcontinent (especially Northern India) to observe the day which marks the shift of the sun into ever-lengthening days, marking the end of winter in India, and beginning of the harvest. The festival is a seasonal observance as well as a religious celebration
On this day, many people go on their terraces or balconies to fly kites. Many even take part in kite flying competitions.
